Strawberry Picking

Saturday was a gorgeous day and we went to get some pick-your-own strawberries at Cottle Strawberry Farm. Geoff had worked on a strawberry farm for a while in college, so he has some feelings about strawberries (mainly a strong aversion to the smell of half-rotten berries mashed in the dirt) but they had such a nice setup at Cottle that even he had a great time.

Plus the girls have been clamoring that "Daddy can teach us how to pick the strawberries, because he knows."

During this early part of the season they aren't necessarily open every day--they'll close for a cold snap, or if it's too rainy/muddy, or too picked-over and more need to ripen. With the advent of facebook, they can just post each day if they're open and what the status is there. Nice!

Twist and pull. No crushing. No pale ones. Cora got good at it really quickly and was soon working independently, bringing back three berries or so at a time to our one bucket. Hazel was happy to keep Dad as her partner.

"Dad, is dis one ripe enough?"

Bucket's getting heavy--time to hand it over to Dad.

Quick stop by the farm stand to pay on the way out. Stickers and temporary tattoos for the kids (Hazel's favorite, as you can see by her arms).
Cora and I love fresh strawberries, Geoff is iffy on them (I think), and Hazel doesn't like them. They are of course keeping better than store-bought strawberries, presumably because they didn't have to go through any travel time to get to us, and I think one gallon is working out to be the perfect size for our family.

Gorgeous Day! Hope you all had a great time. They sure look good. And the berries look good too.
